In the summer it was reported that Margot Robbie was so in love with Harley Quinn that she developed her own movie idea: Harley and some of DC’s other female villains in a movie doing cool stuff. She hired her own writer, Geneva Robertson-Dworet, one of the hottest writers in town, and pitched it to Warner Bros.
They were all for it, and now that movie has a director and a title. David Ayer will direct Gotham City Sirens.
Robbie, of course, will play Harley Quinn again. The other two Sirens will be Poison Ivy and Catwoman, which makes an interesting trio. I can see Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn hitting it off and having a grand time painting Gotham City red, but Catwoman is more of a wild card. She’s not really a villain, but she’s not really a hero. Also, will Batgirl show up in this movie?
I’m not sure if I should be surprised that WB and DC are going back to Ayer. People certainly liked Suicide Squad more than Batman v Superman, and it also did pretty okay at the box office. I’m worried we’re going to see some radically different versions of Catwoman and Poison Ivy, and that bums me out. Like, I’m terrified.
Why would they choose Ayer to direct a female-powered movie like this? Did WB put him on the project or did Robbie want him? [THR]
